"What stuff are you in to?"
"Photography, music, I do martial arts as well..."
"Oooh, wouldn't like to meet you down a dark alley then"

This is the usual line of conversation which arises from me telling somebody who doesn't know much about martial arts, other than that Bruce Lee did it and that we all wear pyjamas whilst training, that I do Karate.

For me training is a really personal thing, but when I set foot inside the Do-Jang I can completely forget about everyday life and really concentrate on the activity that I love.

I started training about thirteen years ago, when my mum saw the adverts for Tang Soo Do classes at our local sports centre. Obviously I thought it was great that I'd be learning Karate - because even I once thought that it was all about kicking and shouting and wearing pyjamas, so a few weeks later I was on my way to the sports centre. After four or five classes my mum was encouraged to join in and we have been training together ever since.

I became an instructor because I thought it would be a great way to continue my training and also to allow others to gain a passion for martial arts just as I have.

For me, Tang Soo Do has not changed my life, but shaped it. Starting at a young age gave me confidence and taught me the importance of discipline and self-discipline which many people lack today. This self-discipline and self-respect has allowed me to keep myself on the straight and narrow, keep focussed through my education and teach me the importance of utmost dedication to what you believe in.

My training keeps me active, in both body and mind and allows me to detach myself from day to day life and I will continue to train for as long as my body permits. Obviously life throws its own obstacles at you from time to time, but I believe with the traits inherited from martial arts, I am a strong enough person to deal with the problems and continue along the road to higher learning and better achievements.
